a day in the life

Going back to life-as-usual in January and February sometimes seems so boring after the craziness of November and December.  And even though our November and December were very busy, this year I feel like January and February are keeping up pace enough that we haven't gotten bored!  Here's what we're usually up to, with some specifics sprinkled in from the last month.

Trevor:

• Goes to work every day designing structures.  His company engineers bridges, houses, cell phone towers, commercial buildings, telephone poles, scoreboards, and more.  He is currently designing the structural parts of a new center-hung jumbotron for Madison Square Garden.  So yeah, he's pretty much famous.
• Plays ping-pong at lunch.  He plays right-handed with the co-workers who are at his same level, and left-handed with the co-workers who just started playing.  So now, he's not just amazing right-handed, he's getting good left-handed too.  It's totally unfair!  I have only beat him once (he was playing left-handed) and I fear I may never beat him again...
• Follows BYU basketball.  We went to two games this season and they were so much fun!  I have decided that we should graduate from the nosebleed section and sit closer to the floor next time.  Maybe we'll catch a t-shirt when the cheerleaders throw them to the crowd or be featured on the kiss-cam or something equally exciting!  We are a little bummed that it looks like we won't be visiting the NCAA tourney this year.
• Keeps busy as the clerk for our ward (church congregation).  He is a champ at keeping everything organized, if I do say so myself.

Emily:

• Teaches 12 piano lessons each week and a group music class for preschool/kindergarten aged kids.  It's so much fun and so time consuming!  I have to keep myself from overdoing things- there is so much demand for music lessons and I would love to be teaching more kids, but I need to avoid overloading myself so I don't get burnt out.  Cassie and Benson love when I teach because they get to play with fun babysitters.
• Has been substituting as the Primary music leader (teaching music to the children in our ward).  Here's my nerdy self coming out: I totally love it.  It is so satisfying to use the things I learned in college and as a choir teacher and to really see the kids learn and improve.  Trevor is a good sport when I give him a play-by-play of how quickly the kids learned or how excited they were.  It will be nice to get some adult instruction again soon, but right now I just love teaching those kids.
• Loves hosting family and friends.  I love that we have a space big enough to have people over!  We celebrated my mom's and my sister-in-law, Renae's birthdays in January and have had friends over for games/snacks/ping pong.  It's a good thing for me to have people over- my house stays a lot cleaner when I know someone is going to see it!
• Is tackling the projects that got left in the dust when the holidays arrived.  You know, like cleaning the oven, taking a load of clothes to the thrift store, cleaning out the fridge, and buying a rug for the entry way.  So far I've cleaned the oven and bought the rug for the entry.  Onward!

Cassie:

• Goes to preschool twice a week.  We both love our co-op preschool.  Cassie adores the other kids and they all play so well together.  She was especially excited about the science experiments they did this month and gave me very animated descriptions of them.
• Is getting ready for kindergarten!  We picked up her registration packet from the school this week.  She is learning to read and is getting good at sounding out words.  How did this happen?  Seriously, kindergarten sneaked up on me.
• Sings all. the. time.  Don't worry, it's adorable and totally sweet.  She is a good little singer!  She is very good at singing in tune and actually has a bright tone- it's not overly breathy like most little girls.  She loves the group music class that I teach.  I actually started it for her since we couldn't do dance this season due to schedule conflicts.

Benson:

• Is a talker!  Sometimes he needs a translator, but his words are getting more and more clear.  I think his longest sentences are three words long, although if you count the nonsense babbling, it's probably more like five or six.  My personal favorite: if you ask him how old he is, he will hold up his index finger and say "one." We'll have to teach him "two" pretty soon!
• Is a troublemaker.  I have to keep my eye on this one.  He is very good at climbing and opening doors, and he has a special interest in the pantry, the computer, writing instruments, and bathroom drawers.  Luckily, nothing horribly disastrous has happened.  Yet.

All of us:

• Have races down the hallway, through the family room, around the kitchen island, and back to the front door.
• Rough house, have tickle wars, and toss Cassie and Benson in the air.
• Play hide-and-seek, sardines, and blind man's bluff.
• Love playing in the snow, especially taking the kids sledding to a nearby hill.

The weekend after Christmas, we headed to Idaho to spend time with Trevor's family.  We must have all been on the same wavelength, because everyone brought snow gear and sleds without talking with anyone else about it.  We spent a super fun morning playing in the snow at the elementary school, which has perfect little sledding hills and big fields that were great for pulling a sled behind a 4-wheeler.

The "big" kids got to ride behind the 4-wheeler all the way home.  We encountered some chickens on the road home, so of course I had to take a picture...good old Idaho.  The baby boys were worn out and they all fell asleep on the ride.  Quincy fell asleep on a sled before we even left!  It was a ton of fun for everyone, adults included!

Once all of the shopping and parties and neighbor gifts and performances were over, it was so fun to just relax and enjoy Christmas with our family.

Christmas Eve is Trevor's birthday, and admittedly, I don't always make it an awesome day for him.  But this year I was a rock star.  I surprised him by organizing a pick up basketball game with some of his friends at our church in the morning.  While he was gone, I got some teenage boys in the ward to come over and help assemble the ping pong table I had sneakily bought for him and hid in the basement!  Some side notes: Huge thanks to my awesome neighbors, Harold and Stephanie, for helping me get the ping pong table from the seller to said basement hiding spot!  Also, I should mention that Trevor is really into ping pong.  He has been playing during his lunch hour at work for the last year-and-a-half and is getting way too good.  He recently beat me while playing left-handed.  Anyway, Trevor was very surprised and happy about both basketball and the ping pong table, and said he felt spoiled, which he deserved. :)

Our first Christmas morning with just our little family was so much fun!  We were all spoiled!  Really, I'm thinking about scaling it back a little next year.

We felt so, so blessed this Christmas, especially because of our wonderful family, friends, and neighbors.  We love you and appreciate you all very much!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

I really, really love the Christmas season!  We put up our Christmas decorations a few days before Thanksgiving...don't worry, I scolded myself a little bit.  But I loved it.  And I love listening to Christmas music.  I don't usually love listening to music (did anyone know that about me?  It's true.  I like silence.), but almost every Christmas song is fun and uplifting, and they all bring back good memories of Christmas, and I can almost always sing along (I do like that...).  Really, the only drawback to the Christmas season can be summed up in a quote I saw on facebook: "Phew!  It's December!  Oh wait, I'm a musician."  December is busy for everyone, but add in a bunch of performances and it gets ridiculous.  I sang with a 7-woman acapella group during December this year, and even though it made my life crazy, it was so, so much fun!

Here we are after a performance at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on Temple Square.  Highlights of the season:  laughing so much during rehearsals, singing for grateful hospital patients, Jill making hilarious comments (the pitches!), Kate's high kick, hearing the audience laughter during "Calorie Christmas" and trying to keep a straight face, and having family and friends support me at performances.  I really enjoyed singing a different genre of music than I'm used to.  It was fun to loosen up and become more confident as a soloist as well.

Wuv and Mawwiage pt. 2

On to the wedding!  Let's begin by saying that this was one of the more adventurous weeks of our lives.  And it all started with hurricane Sandy.  My brother Thom and his family live on the east coast, and the storm seriously impeded their progress in coming to the wedding.  They were scheduled to fly in on Wednesday (Halloween!  They were going to come trick-or-treating with us and everything!  I was so excited...), but the storm hit on Monday night, and on Tuesday morning they discovered that their basement was flooded and their power was out.  And the airports were closed and their flights were cancelled.  Miraculously, they were able to clean their basement and schedule flights for Thursday morning.  It was so fun to have all of the cousins together!

Friday was family pictures and the reception.  The girls were so, so excited to wear pretty dresses and were over the moon about holding flowers!  I only snapped a few pictures before the reception, then I just enjoyed the evening and ate and talked to old friends and neighbors.  It was so much fun.

After the reception, the excitement really began.  Benson threw up all over himself and his carseat on the drive home.  Thanks to some very kind hotel receptionists, we got it mostly cleaned up.  It was a fun smell to deal with until we thoroughly cleaned it.  We found out the next morning that James had also had a rough night with lots of throwing up.  Luckily, Benson seemed to be fine the next morning, and we left Benson and James with a babysitter and were able to go to the sealing.  Both Sarah and Christie had to leave right after the sealing to rescue their babysitters, but I'm so glad we were all together in the temple.  It was beautiful and so joyful.

 My cousin Derek flew from Boston to come to the wedding.  We were really close to his family growing up and he and Robert stayed close through college.

After the wedding, all the adults got together for a luncheon.  Lots of people shared memories of Robert and Renae.  I was really impressed by how much love Robert and Renae have for each other, and it was so sweet to hear about all the love and admiration others have for both of them.  Unfortunately, my weekend got even more exciting a few hours after the luncheon, confirming my suspicion that I am allergic to broccoli. Suffice it to say I spent  my evening kneeling over the toilet and wasn't much of a host to Derek, who was staying at our house.

Anyway, despite all the added adventures, the weekend was glorious!  I loved spending time with Thom and Sarah's family, and I loved the wedding festivities and the chance to see so many family members and friends.  Too bad I have to wait until one of my nieces or nephews is old enough for the next wedding!
